Credential status definitions

A credential record carries exactly one of four statuses. Not recorded is a query outcome, not a status.

The credential is in force as recorded by its source. Routine reliance is appropriate on Active only.

The issuing body has paused the credential pending a stated condition. Treat the underlying permission as unavailable until reinstated, and record the check.

The validity period has lapsed. Expiry is administrative, not disciplinary; reliance requires renewal, not history.

The credential has been withdrawn by the issuing body or the registry. Reliance is inappropriate.

The registry holds no record matching the query. This is neither evidence that a credential does not exist nor confirmation that it does. Treat a not-recorded result as an unverified claim and resolve it with the issuing body directly.

A revoked credential presented as current should be reported through the false-credential process.

In every case, record the status, the identifier, the verification reference and the date of the check in the relying file.
